Founded in 1998, SF READY provides valuable and timely
information and resources regarding emergency management and business continuity
to the San Francisco business community.
The threat-level banner on the home page is automatically updated based on the threat-level
displayed on the White House Homeland Security page, using a CGI
script that sniffs out the name of the image.
Site Design
Markup
This site is built using the XHTML 1.0 Strict language, an enhanced, modern reformulation
of HTML 4.01 that is defined by XML. Its content validates and makes use of tags designed to
enhance the semantics of the content. Pages are hand-coded with a Unicode text editor (I have
only found one that is fully Unicode compliant—e-mail me if you would like the name).
Styling
All styling is done using CSS2, to separate content from
presentation and allow the content to be formatted automatically for
different devices. Styling for desktop computers is currently complete, and will be
augmented by formatting for printing, PDAs, projection/kiosk, TV, and text-only browsers.
Additional formatting might be added for Braile devices and screen-readers for the blind.
Fonts
Headings are set in Verdana with the body set in Georgia—both fonts are
from the Microsoft Web collection. Arial Unicode MS is specified as a back-up
font for characters not found in either Verdana or Georgia. All text uses the
UTF-8 Unicode format.
Browser support
Netscape 4.x and lower, Internet Explorer 4.x and lower, and Opera 4.x and lower
are not supported, since they do not correctly implement Web standards that
are more than 4 years old, much less those from this century.
